Possible Problems During Installation

More Common Problems

  • Incorrect Serial Number, Installation will be Aborted!

Cause:  During installation of the Demo, do not change the serial #.  Leave the serial # as is.  During installation of the released software the User Information fields must be entered exactly the same as when you registered the SalesCart software.

For example, if SalesCart was registered to John B. User, the "Name" field has to be filled in as John B. User. Installation will fail if you use any other name than the registered name.

If you are unsure of the name you used when you registered the product, please go to the password reminder page at:

http://www.salescart.com/scuserroom/SC_PasswordReminder.asp

This will email the registered user's information that should be used for installation.

  • Your Transaction Server Registry Settings are Corrupt. Contact Microsoft Technical Support!

Cause:  This is a bug in the Option Pack 4.0 Personal Web Server (PWS).  Microsoft documents this on their web site at     http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q246/0/81.ASP?LNG=ENG&SA=ALLKB&FR=0

Click below, download the file, then double click on the file and install the registry patch.

Less Common Problems

  • Please install FrontPage 2000 First!!

Cause:  FrontPage 2000 was not found in the registry.  This can only really mean one thing.  FrontPage 2000 is either not installed or the registry was not set during installation.  We suggest you reinstall FrontPage 2000.

  • Your Registry is Corrupt and SalesCart cannot continue!!

Cause:  FrontPage 2000 was not found in the registry and the actual registry entry is not even present.  This can only really mean one thing.  FrontPage 2000 is either not installed or the registry was not set during installation.  We suggest you reinstall FrontPage 2000.

  • ActiveX Data Objects (ADO 1.5) Not Found, Rerun Option Pack 4.0

Cause:  Well in all liklihood this indicate that ADO1.5 or greater is not installed.  Normally, this is installed as a part of the operating system especially in older machines.  ADO, Active X Data Objects is required to Run SalesCart as well as many FrontPage components such as the database results wizard for instance.  We suggest first, you click on Start>>Find>>Files or Folders and look for MSADO15.dll across your entire Hard Disk.  If you can't find this then you need to install a version of MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) that will allow database connectivity on your machine.  Go here to download the applicable version 2.12 of ADO.

Cause:  This occurs when you uninstall the product and then install the product without rebooting in between.  Uninstall, reboot, and reinstall.

Possible Problems Encountered during First Creation of Web

Web Servers and FrontPage (PWS, Personal Web Server, Option Pack 4.0, IIS 5.0)

You can operate FrontPage in two different modes.  Web-based and Server-based.  Web-based webs are in essence "dumb webs".  They don't use a Web server and many of the functions in FrontPage will not work.  However, FrontPage defaults to Web-based webs and most web designers initially are unaware of this distinction.  This is unfortunate because many of the advantages of FrontPage to them are never exposed.  If you access your FrontPage web as "c:\mywebs\etc" or in general as a disk location, you have a disk based web.  If you access you FrontPage web as "http:\\localhost\mywebname" you have a server based web.  SalesCart requires that you operate in a server based web as does most FrontPage components.  If you go to Microsoft FrontPage help, and type Use your computer as a server, you will get this important piece of FrontPage help.

Use your computer as a server
(FrontPage-online Help)

When you install Microsoft FrontPage, it checks to see if you have a Web server installed on your computer. Previous versions of FrontPage installed a Web server by default, so if you have a previous version of FrontPage installed, you probably have a Web server installed as well.

If you have installed a Web server or a previous version of FrontPage or the server extensions, FrontPage automatically updates the server extensions and, if necessary, guides you through the process of configuring your server to use the server extensions. By default, all of the webs you create will be server-based.

If you don't have a Web server installed on your computer, FrontPage installs the server extensions, but does not configure them. By default, all of the webs you create in FrontPage will be disk-based. Use the following procedure to configure your computer as a server and use FrontPage to create server-based webs.

  1. Install server software, such as Microsoft Personal Web Server.

    1. If you have Windows 98 or Windows NT installed on your computer, you can install the Microsoft Personal Web Server from the product CD.

    2. If you have Windows 95 installed on your computer, you can install the Microsoft Personal Web Server from the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack. You can download the Option Pack from the Microsoft Web site.

  2. After you've installed a server on your computer, run Fpsrvadm, the FrontPage Server Extensions administration utility, to configure your server to use the server extensions. If your server is Windows NT Internet Information Services (IIS), you can use the FrontPage Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in instead.

Notes

  • Once you complete this procedure, FrontPage will create server-based webs by default. You can continue to open and save any disk-based webs you may have created prior to configuring your computer as a server. To convert a disk-based web to a server-based web, publish the disk-based web to the URL of your server.

  • For information about how to install and administer the FrontPage Server Extensions, see the FrontPage Server Extensions Resource Kit. If the FrontPage Server Extensions are installed on your computer, you can also access the resource kit by default at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\Serk\nnnn\Default.htm. (The nnnn folder has a numerical name based on the language in which you installed the FrontPage Server Extensions. For example, in a US English installation, the path is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\Serk\1033\Default.htm.)

  • Converting a disk-based web to a server-based Web.

If you have been creating disk-based webs with FrontPage, here are the FrontPage directions on converting a disk-based web to a server-based web.

Convert a disk-based web to a server-based web
(FrontPage-online Help)

If you configured your computer as a server after you installed Microsoft FrontPage, you can use the following procedure to convert your disk-based webs to server-based webs.

  • Open your disk-based web in FrontPage, and then publish the web using HTTP, specifying the URL of your server as the location you want to publish to.

  • Installing a Web server on to FrontPage

If you have Windows95, you have to go and download Option Pack 4.0 from Microsoft.  If you have Windows98 or WindowsME, Option pack 4.0 is on the Windows98/ME CD and you need to have that CD to continue this procedure.  If you have Windows2000, the Add/Remove programs functionality can help you install IIS5.0 which is on the Windows2000 CD.

Note:  Please read and follow the instructions below regarding Microsoft Personal Web Server. In order to run SalesCart properly you MUST have the current version of Microsoft Personal Web Server or Internet Information Server (IIS) installed and running.

SalesCart like any FrontPage component requires Microsoft Personal Web Server (PWS), as shipped with Windows® 98, Windows ME, or Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.  If you have Windows2000, Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0 is shipped in lieu of PWS. It is important to determine which version of PWS or IIS is installed on your system, because an old version or no web server will prevent SalesCart from working.

There are three distinct types of web servers.

§        Microsoft Personal Web Server 4.0 (This is shipped with Windows® 98, ME and Windows NT Professional).

§        FrontPage Personal Web Server (shipped with FrontPage 98 and Microsoft Windows 95). This version is no longer supported.

§        Internet Information Server Web Server (IIS4.0 shipped with Windows NT 4.0 and IIS 5.0 shipped with Windows 2000).

Note:  Although the software is titled "Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack", it contains Microsoft PWS for Microsoft Windows® 95, 98, and ME.

Determining your PWS Version

To determine which version of PWS you have installed on your system, either

Click on:
Start>>Programs>>Internet Explorer>>Microsoft Personal Web Server>>Personal Web Manager.

Or, on some systems.

Click on:
Start>>Programs>>Microsoft Personal Web Server>>Personal Web Manager.

Or, on Windows 2000

Click on:
Start>>Control Panel>>Administrative Tools>>Personal Web Manager.

If you are presented with a Personal Web Manager dialog box, then you have the correct version of PWS and may continue with the SalesCart installation process.

If you do not have Personal Web Manager and do have a Personal Web Server Properties dialog box, then you do not have the current version of PWS.

Personal Web Server in System Tray

You may also see the Personal Web Manager icon running in the control tray located in the very lower right hand corner of your Windows Desktop.  The System Tray is shown below:

The Personal Web Server (PWS) icon is the ICON that looks like this:

If this ICON is present in your System Tray, than the correct version of the PWS is installed.

Note:     If you do not have the current version of PWS, you must un-install the PWS on your system then install the correct version of PWS. The incorrect version also shows up as an Icon entitled Personal Web Server in the Control Panel. The incorrect version should be un-installed using the Add/Remove programs icon in Control Panel.

Un-installing the old FrontPage Personal Web Server

If you have the incorrect version of PWS installed on your system, you must first un-install it before installing the correct version.

To un-install FrontPage Personal Web Server, follow this sequence:

1        Click on:
Start>>Settings>>Control Panel>>Add/Remove Programs>>FrontPage Personal Web Server>>Add/Remove.

2        Restart you computer.

Prior to installing SalesCart onto Windows NT® 4.0 workstation, you must have Microsoft NT Option Pack 4.0 Personal Web Server (PWS) or greater installed. To determine the version of PWS installed on your system, follow the instructions in the section Determining Your PWS Version on page .

Note:     You must un-install the incorrect version of PWS BEFORE installing Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.

To install the latest version of PWS:

1        un-install the PWS that came with FrontPage 98.

2        Restart your computer.

3        Download and install Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.

(The Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack can be downloaded from Microsoft, free of charge.  Check at http://www.salescart.com/support/download.htm (see "http://www.salescart.com/support/download.htm") for the latest link).

Anytime FrontPage is installed or reinstalled and anytime a client Web server is installed or reinstalled, the FrontPage server Extensions must be configured or reconfigured.  SalesCart requires that the FrontPage server Extensions to be installed and operating correctly.  Many other important FrontPage components also require this.  See the FrontPage help detailing this below.

Enable or disable the FrontPage Server Extensions
(FrontPage-online Help)

If a web is server-based and the server is using the Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions, you can extend the functionality of the web by adding page elements such as hit counters, search forms, and confirmation fields. To ensure compatibility with servers that don't use the FrontPage Server Extensions, you can enable or disable commands that rely on the presence of the server extensions on the server. If you disable the server extensions for a web, the related commands will be unavailable (that is, they will appear dimmed) on menus in FrontPage at authoring time.

  1. On the Tools menu, point to Page Options, and then click the Compatibility tab.
  2. If you want to target your web for a server that uses the FrontPage Server Extensions, select the Enabled with Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions check box.

Note   If your server doesn't use the FrontPage Server Extensions and you clear this check box, the following commands will be unavailable:

    • Hit Counter (Insert menu, Component submenu)
    • Confirmation Field (Insert menu, Component submenu)
    • Include Page (Insert menu, Component submenu)
    • Scheduled Include Page (Insert menu, Component submenu)
    • Categories (Insert menu, Component submenu)
    • Search Form (Insert menu, Component submenu)
    • Additional Components (Insert menu, Component submenu)
